Dealing with Septic Tanks and Backups after the Flood Waters Recede

Flooded septic systemWith the hurricane season approaching and based on last year’s activity, flood prone areas around Berwick PA and other towns in NEPA need to be prepared.   It’s a good idea to have a list of resources and information on how to proceed after the damage is done.

Damage to carpet, tile flooring, walls and flooded basements are just some of the issues you may be dealing with.   Services Etcetera Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning may be able to assist with furniture, carpet and basement clean ups but what about your septic system?   If not properly treated your septic system may cause you to experience the damage all over again!

After the flood waters have receded:

  • Do not drink well water until it has been tested by the local health department and or an independent laboratory.
  • Do not use the septic system until the water around the drain field, sand mound or other soil absorption field is lower than the water around your home.
  • If you suspect signs of damage to the septic system, have it professionally inspected.  Although most septic tanks are not damaged by flood and storm waters, silt and other debris may fill the pump chamber and should be cleaned.   It’s highly recommended for safety reasons that the work be performed only by a professional.
  • Check for soil erosion, damaged electrical connections and inspection ports that may be blocked or damaged.   Check all caps, covers and lids.
  •  Remove all foreign solid contaminants in the basement and thoroughly disinfect contaminated areas using 2 cups of chlorine bleach to 1 gallon of water.   A professional restoration contractor should be considered as the cleaning process is based on the chemicals in the waste water.
